Entertainment vs. Learning

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Do the two have to be exclusive?

I really enjoyed the discussion going on in the Growing Up Digital Ning site.

One commenter makes reference to “hard fun,” which we looked at in Papert’s 8 “Big Ideas” on Friday.

How can teachers provide the context for hard fun?

Working Smart

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

On the heels of our seven LearningHacks, I came across this video which talks about organizing schools not in a linear framework, but in cycles. It reminded me of several of our points presented Friday, including making mistakes to learn, motivation, and regular repetition. What this video shares is how we might take advantage of these hacks through project-based approaches.

VSTE in Second Life this Sunday

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Come join VSTE members on Sunday, March 29 at 8:00PM EDT as VSTE hosts Virtual Pioneers for a historical tour of the Jamestown Settlement and Powhatan Village.

We will meet at Virtual Pioneers on Lighthouse Learning Island before the presentation and tour on VSTE Island.

Second Life is an online, 3D virtual environment. Some very savvy users from Virginia Beach have created an online space for VSTE members. I’d encourage you to join VSTE (it’s free), and take advantage of their hard work and learn how you can use Virtual Jamestown in your classroom.

Let me know if you have questions about Second Life.

Curriki

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Today via Twitter I learned about some new 8th grade resources for Math.

Curriki is a collection of free online resources where educators are sharing their lessons, ideas, and curriculum resources. Would you be interested in a summer workshop on using Curriki? Let me know in the comments.

This is what I want…

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

On the same vein as my last post, I’ve gone and created a wiki page for summer class ideas. The proposed window for classes is:

* July 13-16
* July 20-23
* July 27-30

Give me your feedback on what you might like to take this summer. This is an opportunity to learn at a more relaxed pace, get your integration class “out of the way,” and get more in-depth with topics of interest.
