Tagging Yourself

Steve Dembo has been running a series on becoming a better blogger. One post in particular I thought deserved your attention, that on tagging.

*Tagging* is something you can now easily do in teacher blogs, but it’s also alive and well in other areas of the Web, notably, in so-called Web 2.0 applications. I like tagging for a number of reasons myself, but I also think it has benefits for learners.

When we tag something with keywords, we’re forcing ourselves to “summarize” the content in a few succinct, key terms. Why do I like it? It makes finding content easier. I can click on the tag cloud on this blog to find blog posts dealing with different topics. I like it for students because it forces them to consider the material they are writing or expressing and summarizing it. As you may know, summary is a powerful teaching and learning tool. So, tags help you stay organized and also process content.
