Assessing what students know

- Open-ended tasks vs. closed tasks,
- Problem-solving approach vs. skills-based approach,
- Watch what students to in the lesson,
- Avoid the temptation to atomise,
- Assess what students say (about the work they’ve done).
I believe for educators in a standards-driven, testing-is-everything era, #4 will be difficult to overcome.
